Tony Award-winning actor Sydney Earle Chaplin, the third son of film great Charlie Chaplin, died on March 3. He was 82 and died at his home in Rancho Mirage, California.
Chaplin won the 1957 Best Featured Actor in a Musical Tony Award for his performance as Jeff Moss opposite Judy Holliday in Bells Are Ringing. He received a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Nicky Arnstein in Funny Girl, opposite Barbra Streisand, in 1964. His other Broadway credits were In the Counting House, Subways Are for Sleeping and Goodbye, Charlie.
Chaplin, the son of Charlie Chaplin and his second wife, actress Lita Grey, was born on March 31, 1926. He was named after his father’s half-brother, Sydney Chaplin. He appeared in two of his father's films, Limelight in 1952 and A Countess from Hong Kong in 1967. His other film credits include Land of the Pharoahs, Confession, Abdullah the Great, Pillars of the Sky and Double Face. He appears in several documentaries about his father, including Unknown Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin: A Tramp's Life, The Tramp And The Dictator and Charlie: The Life And Art Of Charles Chaplin. He was the longtime owner and manager of Chaplin's, a popular restaurant in Palm Springs, California.
He is survived by his third wife, Margaret Beebe Chaplin, son Stephan and granddaughter Tamara.
