Priscilla Queen of the Desert is heading to Broadway. A stage musical version of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the successful 1994 movie, the production has set its Broadway opening for March 6, 2011.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert centers on three friends (two drag queens and a transsexual) who hop aboard a battered lavender bus (named Priscilla) and take their show to the middle of the Australian outback. But the trip does not go according to plan, and as the tagline says, they end of up on “a journey to the heart of fabulous.”
Stephan Elliott, who wrote and directed the film, collaborated with Allan Scott on the book. The show contains such disco hits as "I Will Survive" and "I Love the Nightlife." The film's costume designer, Lizzie Gardiner, who won an Oscar for her work, reprised her duties for the stage. Melbourne Theater Company Artistic Director Simon Phillips helms the production, which features choreography by Ross Coleman. It premiered in Sydney, Australia before landing in the West End, where it is currently running at the Palace Theatre.
Before hitting the Great White Way, Priscilla will play Toronto in the fall of 2010.
