It looks like Godspell, which was slated to play Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre in September 2008 but never made it in, is still aiming for the Great White Way. Producer Ken Davenport told Variety that the Stephen Schwartz musical, directed by Daniel Goldstein, is back on track for a Broadway berth during the 2010-2011 season.
Goldstein was attached to the previous production, which was supposed to be headlined by Gavin Creel and Diana DeGarmo. No casting for the new production has been announced. Goldstein helmed a successful 2006 mounting of the show at the Paper Mill Playhouse, and he will reunite his creative team from that production: choreographer Christopher Gattelli, set designer David Korins, costume designer Miranda Hoffman, lighting designer Ben Stanton and sound designer Mike Farfalla.
The revival will mark the first Broadway production of the musical since its original run transferred from off-Broadway to Broadway over 30 years ago, closing at the Ambassador Theatre on September 4, 1977 after 527 performances. A 1973 feature film version starred Victor Garber as Jesus, who headlined the legendary Toronto production alongside Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Gilda Radner, Dave Thomas and Martin Short. The show's signature song "Day By Day" reached #13 on the Billboard Top 100 list.
