Been wondering why Heroes and Star Trek star Zachary Quinto has popped up at every Broadway opening of late (Photographic evidence here, here and here!)? According to the Deadline.com, he might be learning the turf of his next cinematic alter ego. The website reports that Quinto is gearing up to play one of Broadway's greatest composers ever, George Gershwin, in a new biopic written by Tony-winning composer Doug Wright and directed by Steven Spielberg.
According to the report, the DreamWorks film could start filming as soon as April, and Quinto is already working with dialect coaches for the part. Mentioned as producers of the film are Marc Platt (Wicked, the film Nine) and Michael Feinstein, the Gershwin-influenced piano man who will star on Broadway this spring in All About Me.
Born Jacob Gershowitz on September 26, 1898 in Brooklyn, Gershwin wrote (alongside lyricist brother Ira Gershwin) some of the greatest Broadway scores of all time, including Oh, Kay!, Funny Face, Strike Up the Band, Girl Crazy, Of Thee I Sing and Porgy and Bess. He died at the age of 38 on July 11, 1937, following surgery for a brain tumor.
The life of Gershwin was previously documented in the 1945 movie musical Rhapsody in Blue.
