The previously announced musical adaptation of the hit movie Bring It On will premiere at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre during an unspecified date in the 2010-2011 season. The show will feature an original libretto by Tony Award-winning Avenue Q author Jeff Whitty, music and lyrics by Tony Award-winning In the Heights composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, music by Tony Award-winning Next to Normal composer Tom Kitt, and lyrics by Amanda Green (High Fidelity). The show will be directed and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, a Tony winner for the choreography of In the Heights. No casting has been announced.
The Alliance announcement describes the show as follows: Two squads, one mission: claim the title at the National Cheerleading Championships. The challenge: competition between the two teams is nothing compared to the competition inside them…and these girls can bring it.
The 2000 film, starring Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford and Gabrielle Union, centered on a champion cheerleading squad from San Diego whose supremacy is threatened by an upstart hip-hop squad from East Compton.
Also on tap at the Alliance during the 2010-2011 season is the world premiere of Pearl Cleage’s The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a Celebration of Their First One Hundred Years, Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County and one more mainstage production still to be announced. Productions at the underground Hertz Stage will include Sammy and Me starring Eric Jordan Young.
