High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens will play Mimi in Rent at the Hollywood Bowl, according to The Los Angeles Times. The fully staged concert, directed by Rent alum Neil Patrick Harris, is set to play from August 6 through August 8 at the Los Angeles venue.
Hudgens is best known for playing Gabriella, love interest of Zac Efron's Troy, in Disney’s High School Musical movies. She has released two solo albums, V and Identified, the first of which was certified gold. Her other film work includes Thirteen, Thunderbirds, Bandslam and Beastly, in which she stars alongside Harris. Hudgens is no stranger to the stage, having performed in musicals such as Carousel, Cinderella, The King and I and The Wizard of Oz.
Rent premiered on Broadway in 1996, winning the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Pultizer Prize for creator Jonathan Larson. It closed on Broadway in September 2008. No further casting for the Hollywood Bowl production has been announced.
