The Guthrie Theater will present an eight-week run of Susan Stroman’s production of the new musical The Scottboro Boys. The show, which recently completed an extended off-Broadway run at the Vineyard Theatre, will begin previews in Minneapolis on July 31, open on August 6 and run through September 25. No casting has been announced.
The Scottsboro Boys features music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, a book by David Thompson and direction and choreography by Stroman. It uses the format of a minstrel show to explore the infamous “Scottsboro” case of the 1930s, in which a group of African American teenagers was unjustly accused of attacking two white women, and the boys' attempts to prove their innocence. The Scottsboro Boys depicts one of the most important and notorious chapters in the history of the American Civil Rights movement.
The Guthrie production is presented by special arrangement with Barry and Fran Weissler and Jacki Barlia Florin.
