Broadway’s getting an early Christmas present with the announcement that Elf the Musical will head to the Al Hirschfield Theatre for a limited holiday run this November, according to The New York Times. Based on the popular 2003 Will Ferrell film of the same name, Elf follows the story of Buddy, a human raised by Santa’s North Pole elves, who travels to New York City to find his real family.
The show features a book by Tony winners Thomas Meehan (Hairspray, Annie) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and a score by The Wedding Singer’s Matthew Sklar (music) and Chad Beguelin (lyrics). Casey Nicholaw (The Drowsy Chaperone) will direct.
“It’s hard to imagine a more ideal show to run over the holidays,” Meehan told the Times, noting that the musical is in “very good shape, very fun shape.” While no casting has been announced, Christian Anderson (High Fidelity) played Buddy in previous readings.
