The students of McKinley High will make a field trip to Transexual, Transylvania, when the hit TV series Glee presents a Rocky Horror Show-themed episode during its second season. Show creator Ryan Murphy revealed at a recent panel at ComicCon that the show's writers are currently working on an episode based on the cult musical, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Written by Richard O'Brien, The Rocky Horror Show first appeared on the London stage in 1973 before tranferring to Broadway for a short-lived run at the Belasco Theatre beginning March 10, 1975. A film adaptation of the musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, was released later that year. Initially considered a flop, the film gained a large cult fanbase in the years following thanks largely to midnight screenings involving audience participation. A 2000 Broadway revival opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre, ran for 437 performances and received four Tony nominations including Best Revival of a Musical. Murphy said the show's hit song "Time Warp" will be included but did not mention other popular songs from the show, including "Damn It, Janet", "Sweet Transvestite" and "Whatever Happened to Saturday Night."
Murphy also revealed details about the previously reported Britney Spears episode, entitled "Britney/Brittany," which will feature scene-stealer Heather Morris' ditzy cheerleader Brittany singing a solo for the first time. "We're doing it in a fun, hallucinogenic way," says Murphy of the episode. However Glee club instructor Mr. Schuester won't be a fan of the pop diva. "The entire episode is Schuester saying, "'I don't want to do Britney! I don't want to do Britney!'" It was also announced that Tony winners Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel will reprise their season one roles as April Rhodes and Shelby Corcoran. Newcomer Chord Overstreet will also begin a series of guest spots as Sam, a high school basketball player who becomes competition for Finn.
In other Glee ComicCon news, the long-running animated series The Simpsons announced that several Glee cast members will get animated and lend their vocals as guest stars during the show's upcoming 22nd season, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Glee's second season will begin on September 21 on Fox. The show recently received 19 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series.
