The cult-classic 80s flick Heathers is getting the musical treatment, in a new stage adaptation bound for Joe’s Pub this fall. The tuner, featuring a score by Tony Award nominee Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde) and Kevin Murphy makes its New York debut on September 13 in a set of concert performances. Casting for the piece, which is directed by Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness) will be announced shortly.
A twisted black comedy, the original Heathers film starred Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk and Kim Walker. A classic geek gets revenge story, the flick follows out-of-place good girl Veronica (Ryder) as she tries to assimilate with “The Heathers”, Westerberg High School’s catty in-crowd (who all, fittingly, share the name Heather). Things take a dark turn when Veronica hooks up with the deviant new guy in town, Jason (Slater), who pulls his new lover into a web of murders, faked suicides and epic social meltdowns.
Previous readings of the piece reportedly featured Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), Jenna Leigh Green (Wicked), Christine Lakin (Valentine) and Corri English (lead singer of BrokeDown Cadillac).
The concert presentation of Heathers: The Musical is produced by Andy Cohen, J. Todd Harris and Amy Powers in association with Sh-K-Boom Records, La Jolla Playhouse, Lakeshore Entertainment and Denise Di Novi.
