Carol Burnett Gets Guest Role in Glee; Jonathan Groff Set to Return
TV icon and Broadway vet Carol Burnett is the latest star readying to storm the Glee stage. Burnett will guest star as the previously referenced but never seen Nazi-hunting mother of Cheerio coach Sue Sylvester, according to EW.com. The episode will air sometime in October.
Tony nominee Jonathan Groff will also be back during season two, reprising his role as Jesse St. James for two episodes in the spring, according to People's TV Watch. No information has been released about Groff's plotline. While rumors of Glee hitting the big screen have been stirring, show creator Ryan Murphy says a movie is not likely, but he hopes to film a live version of the show's concert tour, which briefly played cities including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago last spring. "I would do that just because there are so many kids particularly who love the show, and we can’t go to every city," Murphy said. "I think we’re going to shoot that next year."
Burnett is best known for her 11-year run on her variety series The Carol Burnett Show. Her many other TV credits include Mama's Family, Mad About You and Desperate Housewives. She has appeared on Broadway in Once Upon a Mattress, Fade Out-Fade In, Moon Over Buffalo and Putting It Together and is the author of the autobiographical play Hollywod Arms. Burnett also starred in the 1982 film adaptation of Annie as Miss Hannigan and the 2005 TV film version of Once Upon a Mattress as Queen Aggravain.
Groff is a Tony nominee for Spring Awakening and was featured in seven episodes of Glee's first season. He also appeared on Broadway in the short-lived In My Life and in the film Taking Woodstock. He will make his West End debut in Deathtrap opposite Simon Russell Beale and Estelle Parsons beginning August 20.
Glee recently received 19 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series. The second season will begin September 21 on Fox and feature tribute episodes to Britney Spears and Rocky Horror as well as guest spots from several Broadway luminaries including Cheyenne Jackson and Kristin Chenoweth.
