Academy Award winner Jane Fonda will reprise the role that earned her a 2009 Tony Award nomination, starring in the Mark Taper Forum's forthcoming production of 33 Variations. Written and directed by Moises Kauffman, the play will begin performances at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles on January 3, 2011, for a limited engagement through March 6. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
In 33 Variations, Fonda stars as musicologist Dr. Katherine Brandt, a mother and scholar battling a chronic illness while working to complete her in-depth study of the last years of Beethoven’s life. The play made its Broadway debut at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on February 9, 2009, opening on March 9 and playing 85 performances in a limited engagement that closed on May 24. The production was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Actress (Fonda) and Best Featured Actor (Zach Grenier as Beethoven).
In addition to 33 Variations, Fonda has appeared on Broadway in There Was a Little Girl, which earned her a 1960 Tony Award nomination, as well as Invitation to a March, The Fun Couple and Strange Interlude. She is best known for Academy Award winning turns in the films Klute and Coming Home, as well as flicks such as Nine to Five, The China Syndrome, Barbarella, Barefoot in the Park and Monster-in-Law. Fonda is also a prolific activist, fitness guru and author.
