Oscar and Tony-winning actor Kevin Spacey will take on the title role in Richard III during the Bridge Project's 2012 season. Directed by Sam Mendes, William Shakespeare's Richard III will open at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Harvey Theatre in February 2012, followed by an international tour. The production will then play the Old Vic in May 2012.
Spacey is a Tony winner for Lost in Yonkers. He has also appeared on Broadway in A Moon for the Misbegotten, The Iceman Cometh, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Hurlyburly and Ghosts. Spacey has taken to the Old Vic stage several times in Inherit the Wind, Speed-the-Plow, National Anthems, The Philadelphia Story and Richard II. His many film credits include The Usual Suspects, L.A. Confidential, Superman Returns and Glengarry Glenn Ross. He also starred in the Mendes directed film, American Beauty, which won both men Academy Awards.
One of Shakespeare's earliest plays, Richard III tells the story of the quick rise and demise of the cunning king.
The Bridge Project's previous productions have included the Bard's As You Like It, The Winter's Tale and The Tempest. Richard III will be a part of the final year of the Project's three-year transatlantic production partnership between the Brooklyn Academy of Music, London's Old Vic (where Spacey is the artistic director) and Mendes' Neal Street Productions.
