The previously announced film adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Rabbit Hole has set a limited release date for December 17. The movie will expand to theaters nationwide on January 14, 2011. John Cameron Mitchell directs a cast that features Academy Award winners Nicole Kidman and Dianne Wiest, Aaron Eckhart, Sandra Oh and Tammy Blanchard.
In Rabbit Hole, Becca (Kidman) and Howie Corbett (Eckhart) have everything they could want—until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. Becca, who must also cope with the distractions of her reckless sister Izzy (Blanchard) and their opinionated mother Nat (Wiest), takes solace in her unlikely friendship with a neighborhood teenager Jason (Miles Teller) who might provide the key to lead her back from the darkest of places.
The original Broadway production of Rabbit Hole, starring Cynthia Nixon as Becca, John Slattery as Howie and John Gallagher Jr. as Jason, ran from February 2 through April 9, 2006 at the Biltmore Theatre, earning Nixon a 2006 Best Leading Actress Tony Award in the process.
Lindsay-Abaire's other plays include Kimberly Akimbo, Wonder of the World and Fuddy Meers and he recently adapted Cornelia Funke's novel Inkheart for the big screen. He also wrote the book for the Tony Award-nominated musical Shrek. His newest play, Good People, will play Broadway's Friedman Theatre, beginning on February 8, 2011.
