The newcomers keep coming at Glee: Singer, songwriter and actor Darren Criss will join the hit show as “a cute and charismatic gay student from a rival glee club named the Dalton Academy Warblers,” according to EW.com. Speculation has already begun that Criss’ character, Blaine, is being set up as a love interest for Emmy nominee Chris Colfer as Kurt—but a set source tells EW that the two characters have a platonic friendship, at least in the beginning.
After last week’s debut episode, fans theorized that new quarterback Sam, played by Chord Overstreet, was being positioned as Kurt’s boyfriend, but Colfer told EW that there’s no flirting going on between Kurt and the blond hunk in the show’s first four episodes. “Maybe it is too obvious,” Colfer said. “Our writers have a way of avoiding the obvious and throwing curveballs.”
Criss appeared as Josh Burton in five episodes of the 2009 series Eastwick and guest-starred in an episode of Cold Case. While studying at the University of Michigan, he composed the songs and played the title role in the Harry Potter video spoof A Very Potter Musical, which brought him YouTube fame.
