Jonny Lee Miller will have not one but two starring roles in an upcoming production of Frankenstein at London’s National Theatre, according to The Daily Mail. Miller will star as both Dr. Frankenstein and his monster, and will alternate the roles each night with co-star Benedict Cumberbatch. As previously announced, Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) will direct.
Miller, who recently appeared on Broadway opposite Sienna Miller in After Miss Julie, counts Festen, Someone Who'll Watch Over Me and Democracy among his London stage credits. He starred as “Sick Boy” in Boyle’s 1996 breakout film, Trainspotting; other film credits include Hackers, The Flying Scotsman, Mansfield Park and Love, Honor and Obey; his television credits include the title role in series Eli Stone and the recent BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.
Cumberbatch was recently seen at the National Theatre in a production of Terence Rattigan’s After the Dance directed by Thea Sharrock. Among his screen credits are the films Atonement, Amazing Grace and The Other Boleyn Girl, and he stars as Sherlock Holmes in the modern BBC adaptation series Sherlock.
This production of the classic Mary Shelley novel, adapted by Nick Dear, will be told from the monster’s point of view. Frankenstein is scheduled to being performances in early February 2011 at the National Theatre’s Olivier Stage.
