London’s National Theatre has announced that new works Greenland and The Holy Rosenbergs, along with Clifford Odets’ Rocket to the Moon, will be part of its 2010-2011 season. Additionally, both the Tony Award nominated hit Fela! and Hamlet, helmed by the National's artistic director Nicholas Hytner-helmed, will be broadcast to cinemas worldwide as part of National Theater Live. The two works are currently playing in repertory at the National Theatre.
Greenland is a new piece of documentary theater that explores our changing relationship with the planet, created by Moira Buffini, Matt Charman, Penelope Skinner and Jack Thorne. National Theatre associate director Bijan Sheibani will direct a cast that includes Michael Gould, Isabella Laughland, Amanda Lawrence, Tunji Lucas, Lyndsey Marshal, Peter McDonald and Rhys Rusbatch. Performances will begin January 25, 2011, and the show will officially open on February 1.
The season will continue with the previously announced Frankenstein, directed by Danny Boyle and starring Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch alternating the roles of Dr. Frankenstein and the monster. The show will begin performances February 5 ahead of a February 22 opening.
The season will continue with Olivier Award winner Henry Goodman leading the cast of The Holy Rosenbergs, a new play by Ryan Craig. Laurie Sansom directs the piece which explores tribal loyalties, the culpability of family and the consequences of standing up for what you believe to be right. It will begin performances on March 8, 2011, and open on March 16; no additional casting has been announced.
Rocket to the Moon is the 1938 classic by Clifford Odets’ that puts opportunity in the way of a quietly desperate man, a struggling dentist rapidly approaching 40, and waits. Angus Jackson will direct the production, scheduled to begin performances March 23, 2011, and officially open on March 30. No casting has been announced.
Fela!, Hamlet and Frankenstein will all be broadcast to theaters worldwide as part of the company’s National Theatre Live initiative. Hamlet will be broadcast January 9, Fela! January 13 and Frankenstein on March 17. In addition, the Donmar Warehouse production of King Lear, directed by Michael Grandage and featuring Derek Jacobi in the title role, will be broadcast from the Donmar’s home in Covent Garden on February 3, 2011.
