Casting has been announced for the musical adaptation of Dangerous Beauty at California's Pasadena Playhouse. Joining previously announced star Jenny Powers (Grease) as Veronica Franco will be James Snyder (Cry Baby) as Marco Venier, Bryce Ryness (Hair) as Maffio Venier, Laila Robins (Heartbreak Hotel) as Paola Franco, Michael Rupert (Legally Blonde) as Domenico Venier, Megan McGinnis (Little Women) as Beatrice Venier and Jon Anthony (White Christmas) as Pietro Venier.
Performances for the musical, which features a book by Jeannine Dominy, lyrics by Amanda McBroom and music by Michele Brourman, begin February 1, 2011, with an opening set for February 13. The limited run will play through February 27 and is directed by Tony nominee Sheryl Kaller.
The cast will also feature Morgan Weed as Guilia, Michael Baker as Bishop Della Torre, Joe Mandragona as Tinoteretto, Nighel Columbus as Ramberti, Marcus Choi as Tron and Matthew Tyler as Grand Inquisitor. Irasole Cardona, Melissa Harding, Jessica Lee Keller, Katherine Malak, Angela Wildflower Polk, Angel Reda and Jessica Vosk will all appear as courtesans.
Set in 16th century Verona, the true story follows Veronica, a young girl forced into life as a courtesan when her family loses their fortune. Her profile begins to rise in the city's cultural society, however she is soon put on trial for witchcraft. The production is based on the book The Honest Courtesan by Margaret Rosenthal, which was adapted into the 1998 film, Dangerous Beauty.
The production features choreography by Benoit-Swan Pouffer, costume design by Soyon An, scenic design by Tom Buderwitz, lighting design by Russell Champa and sound design by Jon Weston.
