Lysistrata Jones, a new musical with a book by Douglas Carter Beane and music by Lewis Flinn, will make its New York debut with off-Broadway’s Transport Group in May 2011. The show premiered at Dallas Theater Center earlier this year (under the title Give It Up!) helmed by director-choreographer Dan Knechtges, who will reprise his duties in New York.
The show is a modern update of Greek drama Lysistrata, in which the women of Athens deny their men sex until they stop going to war. In Lysistrata Jones, the girls of Athens U won’t put out for their basketball team boyfriends until they win a game.
Beane has previously written the book for musical Xanadu, and is rumored to be revamping the book of Sister Act before it makes its way from London to Broadway in March 2011. He is the author of such plays as The Little Dog Laughed, As Bees in Honey Drown, Mr. and Mrs. Fitch and the The Nance.
Lysistrata Jones will be staged, fittingly, on the basketball court at the Judson Memorial Church gymnasium in downtown Manhattan. Exact dates and casting are yet to be announced.
