Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, a musical adaptation of the Spanish movie of the same name by Pedro Almodovar, will play its final performance at the Belasco Theatre on Sunday, January 2, 2011. The Lincoln Center Theater production, originally set to run through January 23, will have played 30 preview and 69 regular performances at the time of closing.
With a cast filled with Broadway heavyweights including Tony Award winners Patti LuPone, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Laura Benanti and Danny Burstein, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown was named the most-anticipated new musical by Broadway.com readers prior to starting performances on October 8, 2010. Also starring Sherie Rene Scott, de'Adre Aziza, Justin Guarini, Nikka Graff Lanzarone and Mary Beth Peil, the show opened to mixed reviews on November 4, 2010.
Set in 1980s Madrid and telling the story of the intertwining lives of a group of women whose relationships with men lead to a tumultuous 48 hours of love, confusion and passion, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown features a book by Jeffrey Lane, music and lyrics by David Yazbek and direction by Bartlett Sher (South Pacific).
