Two-time Tony nominee Gavin Creel will play the title role in Prometheus Bound, a new musical by Grammy and Tony Award winner Steven Sater (Spring Awakening), with music by System of a Down lead singer Serj Tankian, also a Grammy winner. The show will premiere at Boston’s American Repertory Theater on February 25, helmed by A.R.T. artistic director Diane Paulus, who directed Creel in the Broadway revival of Hair. The limited engagement is scheduled to continue through April 2.
Prometheus Bound, inspired by Aeschylus's ancient Greek tragedy about the suffering of Western civilization's first prisoner of conscience, illustrates one man's struggle against the brute force of a ruthless dictator. It will premiere in A.R.T.’s new club theater Oberon, which Paulus calls a "second stage for the 21st century," designed to immerse the audience in an environment "that has the Dionysian energy and rebelliousness of a rock concert." Additional casting will be released later this month.
Creel, who earned a Tony nominations for his roles in Hair and Thoroughly Modern Millie, has also been seen on Broadway in the 2005 revival of La Cage aux Folles. He appeared in off-Broadway's Bat Boy, and played Bert in Mary Poppins on the London stage. He and Paulus are rumored to be collaborating yet again on an upcoming Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz's Pippin.
Prometheus Bound will feature choreography by Stephen Petronio, set design by Riccardo Hernandez and sound design by Clive Goodwin.
