On the day of the play’s first preview, Manhattan Theatre Club has announced a one-week extension of its New York premiere of The Whipping Man. Matthew Lopez’s play will have its first performance on January 13 at New York City Center Stage I and open on February 1. The limited engagement is now scheduled to continue through March 20, directed by Doug Hughes.
The Whipping Man stars two-time Emmy Award winner André Braugher (TV’s Men of a Certain Age and Homicide), André Holland (Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, The Brother/Sister Plays) and Jay Wilkison (film adaptation of Rabbit Hole).
Lopez’s play centers on three men at a crossroads: a Jewish Confederate soldier (Wilkison) who has returned from battle, and two former slaves (Braugher and Holland) who were raised as Jews in his household. As the three men reunite to celebrate Passover, they uncover a tangle of secrets that might cost them their freedom.
The creative team for The Whipping Man includes John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Ben Stanton (lighting design), Jill BC DuBoff (sound design), Tom Watson (hair & wig design) and J. David Brimmer (fight direction).
