Nicole Kidman, who will head back to Broadway later this year in Sweet Bird of Youth, received a 2011 Best Actress Oscar nomination for playing a grieving mother in the film adaptation of David Lindsay-Abaire's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Rabbit Hole. The Sister Act composing duo of Alan Menken and Glenn Slater received a Best Song nomination for “I See the Light" from Tangled, the Disney animated remake of Rapunzel. Nominees for the 83rd Oscars were announced on January 25 in Los Angeles for a ceremony to be held on February 27 at the Kodak Theatre, co-hosted by Best Actor nominee James Franco (127 Hours) and Anne Hathaway.
The acting nominees also included theater vets Mark Ruffalo and Annette Bening (Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress for The Kids Are All Right) and Oscar frontrunner Natalie Portman (Best Actress for Black Swan).
Adapted Screenplay nominees who have also written for the stage included Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) and Joel and Ethan Coen, whose remake of True Grit received a total of 10 nominations. Mike Leigh was nominated for his original screenplay of Another Year.
Menken is an eight-time Oscar winner for his work on the Disney films The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Pocahontas and holds the distinction of the most Oscar wins by a living person. His nominated song from Tangled is sung by Mandy Moore as Rapunzel.
The King's Speech led the overall list with 12 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Also in the running for Best Picture are Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit and Winter's Bone.
