Manhattan Theatre Club’s New York premiere of Matthew Lopez’s The Whipping Man has extended for a second time prior to its February 1 opening night performance. The off-Broadway production of the play will now run through March 27 at New York City Center Stage I, directed by Doug Hughes.
The Whipping Man stars two-time Emmy Award winner André Braugher (TV’s Men of a Certain Age and Homicide), André Holland (Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, The Brother/Sister Plays), and Jay Wilkison (Rent, film version of Rabbit Hole).
Lopez’s play centers on three men at a crossroads: a Jewish Confederate soldier (Wilkison) who has returned from battle, and two former slaves (Braugher and Holland), who were raised as Jews in his household. As the three men reunite to celebrate Passover, they uncover a tangle of secrets that might cost each man his freedom.
