Fulfilling its mission to present rarely seen musicals, New York City Center’s Encores! series is set to premiere a production of Lost in the Stars, the 1949 collaboration between composer Kurt Weill and lyricist/librettist Maxwell Anderson. With a cast that includes Tony winner Chuck Cooper, Tony nominee Daniel Breaker and Broadway-bound Sister Act star Patina Miller, this so-called “musical tragedy” (based on the novel Cry, the Beloved Country) centers on two aging South African men—one black, one white—bound by grief in a country ruled by apartheid. As Gary Griffin’s production prepares to debut for four performances, February 3-6, we’ve put together a First Look gallery of Joan Marcus’ production shots of Lost in the Stars.
