Saved by Broadway! Ashthon Jones Wins American Idol Wild Card Spot with Dreamgirls Anthem

Continuing this season’s shakeup of American Idol, almost half of the top 24 were sent packing on March 3 during the exciting live results show. Ten contestants made the cut based on votes from the viewing audience, but the remaining 14 were kept in suspense as judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson selected six favorites for a live “sing-off.” First up: Ashthon Jones, who returned to the tune that had carried her through before: “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” Effie’s show-stopper from Dreamgirls. The Broadway anthem did the trick, as Jones was tapped for one of three wild-card spots. A total of 13 contestants will go forward for a second week of competition on Idol.
