The announced Broadway production of Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig, starring Dane Cook, Josh Hamilton, Julia Stiles and Heather Jane Rolff and directed by the author, is off. The show, which was scheduled to begin performances at the Belasco Theatre on April 12 and open on April 26, is postponing its Broadway bow until next season. The delay is due to the last-minute fallout of a key investment. This did not leave the producers enough time to reacquire the necessary capital and begin rehearsals on schedule to open prior to the Tony Awards cutoff date.
"It’s our dream to keep this terrific cast and stunning creative team intact as we work to reschedule Fat Pig for next season," Aldo Scrofani and Heather Provost said in a statement. "The current financial situation did not leave adequate time to maintain the integrity of the show and its marketing campaign. This play deserves to be seen on Broadway and we remain very much committed to that goal."
Fat Pig follows an overweight woman, Helen, who forms a relationship with a thinner man named Tom. Their relationship begins to struggle when Tom's friends have difficulty accepting her appearance.
The original off-Broadway production of Fat Pig opened at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on December 15, 2004, produced by MCC Theater and directed by Jo Bonney. The well-reviewed production starred Andrew McCarthy as Carter, Jeremy Piven as Tom, Keri Russell as Jeannie and Ashlie Atkinson as Helen. It won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play.
