The Book of Mormon, the smash-hit new musical from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, claims to have scored quite an impressive fan: God! Mormon, which is billed "God's favorite musical" in promotional materials, is hardly the first tuner to address religious themes, so Broadway.com asked readers which show they truly think is God's top choice.
The Sound of Music turned out to be one of the deity's "favorite things," landing 31% of votes for the top spot in our poll. The Tony-winning Rodgers & Hammerstein classic opened on Broadway in 1959 before being adapted into the Oscar-winning 1965 film starring Julie Andrews.
Two Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals shared runner-up status: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar both earned 11% of votes. The composer received Tony nominations for the scores of both shows.
Third place also resulted in a tie, with The Book of Mormon and Fiddler on the Roof earning 10% of votes. Fiddler took home the Tony Award in 1964 and, at the time of its closing in 1972, ranked as the longest running musical in Broadway history. The show has been revived four times on Broadway. Meanwhile, Mormon is settling in for what promises to be a long and happy Broadway run.
Thanks for voting!
