Wicked and 9 to 5 veteran Megan Hilty is in the midst of filming the pilot for NBC’s Smash and thrilled with the Broadway-themed project so far. “It’s very exciting,” she gushed to Broadway.com. “I hope the whole world gets to see it, but it’s a pilot so you never know.”
In the pilot, Hilty plays Ivy Lynn, a Broadway performer with dreams of hitting the big time. “She hasn’t broken out of the chorus and she’s dying to play a lead character,” she revealed. As a new musical centered around Marilyn Monroe readies for Broadway, Ivy gets her shot when she’s cast in the lead role during the show’s workshop. But will Ivy take the tuner all the way to Broadway? “It looks like it might be her chance, but we don’t know if she gets it or not!”
Featuring a pilot script by prolific playwright Theresa Rebeck (Mauritius) and directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), Smash stars Debra Messing as a lyricist married to Brian d'Arcy James. “There’s so much depth to the script,” Hilty continued. “It’s just amazing. Each character has their own crazy storyline.”
Hilty gets to show off her musical chops with original songs being written for Smash by the Tony-winning songwriting team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can). “The majority of the music is original and there are a couple of other things thrown in,” Hilty said.
“All of my musical numbers are being filmed this week,” she said. “I’m dancing in it! Who knew? Who knew?!”
