Could Madonna star in a film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Sunset Boulevard? The Tony-winning composer hopes so. "I bet you this never, ever happens, but you know who would make a great Norma Desmond on screen? Madonna," Lloyd Webber told Piers Morgan while guesting on his talk show. "She's the right age. I've not got through to her. She hasn't taken my call this time."
A Sunset Boulevard remake (Webber's musical is based on the Oscar-nominated 1950 film of the same name) would mark a reunion for Madonna and Lloyd Webber. Madonna received a Golden Globe for playing the title role in the 1996 film adaptation of Lloyd Webber's Tony-winning musical Evita.
Sunset Boulevard tells the story of Norma Desmond, an aging silent film star who recruits young writer Joe Gillis to help relaunch her career in the world of talking films. A reclusive shut-in, Desmond forms an unhealthy obsession with Gillis and soon demands he move in to her lavish Hollywood mansion. The Billy Wilder-directed 1950 film starred Gloria Swanson as Desmond and William Holden as Gillis. Lloyd Weber's musical adaptation, which features lyrics and book by Christopher Hampton and Don Black, first played London's West End in 1993 with Patti LuPone starring as Norma. Glenn Close played the role when the show transferred to Broadway in 1994.
Madonna recently directed the upcoming film W.E. Her film acting credits include A League of Their Own, Desperately Seeking Susan, Who's That Girl, The Next Best Thing, Four Rooms and Dick Tracy.
