Could iconic actor and two-time Academy Award-winner Robert De Niro come to Broadway? The star of Taxi Driver, The Godfather, Goodfellas and Raging Bull, among many, many others, expressed his interest in the stage to talk show host Charlie Rose during a recent interview.
De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, with whom he co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival, sat down to chat with Rose during the Festival's milestone tenth annual run. When Rose inquired if De Niro ever considered returning to the theater like his Godfather co-star Al Pacino, De Niro, who recently visited with pal Robin Williams backstage at his Broadway show, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, was circumspect. “I’ve been thinking about it recently because I’ve seen friends of mine in plays: Ben Stiller is in a play, Robin Williams is in a play, Al [Pacino] I’ve seen in his plays,” said De Niro. “So, I’ve thought of it, I just don’t know what at this point. It’s a commitment of time and so on, so I’m looking for stuff.”
Though he won Oscars for his roles in The Godfather: Part II and Raging Bull, De Niro’s first and only appearance on the Great White Way was in Cuba & His Teddy Bear in 1986. Stay tuned to find out if he’ll be back!
