Mother’s Day is traditionally a time for breakfast in bed, crayoned love notes and bouquets of spring flowers. Sure, all of that is lovely, but it’s not exactly memorable. We respectfully suggest a new tradition: Bring your mother to Broadway! Celebrate the holiday by introducing your mom to one of these five Broadway mamas we're sure she would love to meet. (Click on the title to book your tickets!)
Donna Sheridan, Mamma Mia!
When one thinks of Broadway moms, Donna Sheridan—the center of this likable hit—usually comes to mind first. The story centers on this free-spirited former rocker and the excitement surrounding her daughter's wedding day. Transport your mother to this Greek island setting for a sweet musical featuring the hummable hits of '70s super-group ABBA.
Morticia Addams, The Addams Family
Does your mom have a dark sense of humor? If so, then she’ll be sure to identify with the macabre matriarch of this weird and wonderful family. Morticia comforts herself about getting older, fiercely loves her family and does a mean tango—all while looking slinky in an inky dress cut to there. What’s not for a mother to love?
Alice, Wonderland
Being a mother can seem like going down a rabbit hole into another dimension (especially during the sleep-deprived early years when the little ones are teething). Thus, she’ll relate to Alice, a mom whose life is spinning out of control. No matter if your mum is a fan of big belting, boy bands or tall tales, she’ll find it all in this new spin on an old classic.
Florence Greenberg, Baby It’s You
You know what moms love? Good music they already know (this time pop hits from the early '60s) and true stories. This show has both. It’s about a bored Jersey housewife who founded the Shirelles, one of the most successful girl groups of all time, while bringing up her two kids and following her heart. It’s a Mother’s Day home run.
Bubbie, The People in the Picture
Oy, what mom doesn’t love a good cry? Bubbie, the lovable, indulgent grandma (formerly an actress in Yiddish films) at the heart of this Broadway musical, shares her tale of a motherly sacrifice during the Holocaust with her granddaughter. Sounds like a downer, but it’s really a sentimental story that will make your mother sigh with joy.
Mother Superior, Sister Act
OK, OK. She’s not technically a mother. But Mother Superior has all kinds of maternal attributes: sternness, humor, forgiveness, a no-nonsense approach to just about everything and a way with guilt. Besides, if you want your mom to have fun on her special holiday, you’re golden with a trip to musical comedy heaven. Happy Mother’s Day!
