The Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman musical Road Show will have its British premiere at London's Menier Chocolate Factory, starring David Bedella and Michael Jibson. As previously reported, John Doyle, who helmed the original production at the Public Theater in 2008, directs the musical, which will begin performances on June 24 ahead of a July 6 opening. The limited engagement is scheduled to continue through September 18.
Road Show follows the colorful career of the Mizner brothers, whose adventures across America at the turn of the 20th century eventually led to the Florida real estate boom of the 1930s.
Bedella and Jibson lead the cast in the roles of Wilson and Addison Mizner, respectively, with Jon Robyns taking on the role of Hollis Bessemer and Gillian Bevan that of Mama Mizner. The company will also include Adrian der Gregorian, Fiona Dunn, Sarah Ingram, Julie Jupp, Glyn Kerslake, Elizabeth Marsh, Christopher Ragland and Robbie Scotcher.
Bedella’s West End theatre credits include Chicago, The Rocky Horror Show and Jerry Springer–The Opera, for which he won an Olivier Award. Jibson has appeared in the West End in the RSC’s Canterbury Tales and in Our House (Olivier nomination). Robyns was in the original London cast of Avenue Q, and recently played Marius in Les Miserables in the West End and at the 25th anniversary concert at the O2. Bevan was recently seen in the concert version of Company at the Queen's Theatre and in the original cast of Follies at the Shaftesbury Theatre.
In addition to directing, John Doyle will serve as the show’s set designer. Musical supervision and direction are by Catherine Jayes, costume design by Matthew Wright, lighting design by Jane Cox and sound design by Gareth Owen.
