Natural Woman, a new musical mining the catalog of singer/songwriter Carole King and based on her life story, is in the works, according to The New York Post. An industry reading of the show reportedly took place on May 16, featuring King hits like "Chains," "Crying in the Rain" and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” along with a book by Douglas McGrath, who wrote the screenplays for Emma and Bullets over Broadway.
Natural Woman traces the life and career of the prolific King, who began writing songs as a teenager in Brooklyn, before attending Queens College where she hung out with Neil Sedaka, Paul Simon and future husband Gerry Goffin. King's troubled marriage to Goffin, whom she divorced in 1968, serves as a focal point of the show. Much of the action of the musical is set in the Brill Building, the hotbed of pop music hit-makers in the 1950s and 60s.
No director is attached to the project yet, but the Post reports that Tony nominee Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes) is a fan of King’s music and might soon be "taking a meeting” about the project.
