The planned Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz’s Godspell has found a home. The musical, directed by Daniel Goldstein, will play the Circle in the Square Theatre beginning on October 13. Opening night is scheduled for November 7.
Goldstein was attached to the previous production, which was supposed to be headlined by Gavin Creel and Diana DeGarmo in September 2008. No casting for the new production has been announced. Goldstein helmed a successful 2006 mounting of the show at the Paper Mill Playhouse, and he will reunite his creative team from that production: choreographer Christopher Gattelli, set designer David Korins, costume designer Miranda Hoffman and lighting designer Ben Stanton.
The revival will mark the first Broadway production of the musical since its original run transferred from off-Broadway to Broadway over 30 years ago, closing at the Ambassador Theatre on September 4, 1977 after 527 performances. A 1973 feature film version starred Victor Garber as Jesus, who headlined the legendary Toronto production alongside Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Gilda Radner, Dave Thomas and Martin Short. The show's signature song "Day By Day" reached #13 on the Billboard Top 100 list.
In an unprecedented endeavor, producer Ken Davenport has invited the general public to help produce the show with a minimum investment of $1000. Contributors will be official investors in the show with their names displayed outside the theater.
