Ready for a very Hedwig Halloween? Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is presenting a one-night-only engagement of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's Hedwig and the Angry Inch on October 31. The event stars David Brian Colbert in the title role and Petra DeLuca as Hedwig's gender-bending lover Yitzhak. The show, directed by Aaron Mark and featuring musical direction by Matt Hinkle, will take place at off-Broadway's New World Stages and benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Colbert and DeLuca have toured the country in the roles of Hedwig and Yitzhak, and have performed three prior benefits for Broadway Cares. The previous versions in 2005, 2006 and 2009 were all sold-out sensations.
With a book by Mitchell and score by Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of a transsexual punk rock singer from East Berlin who shares her life story with the audience while touring America with her band, the Angry Inch. The original off-Broadway production opened at the Jane Street Theatre on February 14, 1998 with Mitchell as Hedwig and Miriam Shor as Yitzak. It went on to play 857 performances before closing on April 9, 2000. Mitchell is reportedly planning a Broadway bow for the show.
