Is Linda Eder, who made a splashy debut in ex-husband Frank Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde in 1997, still the composer's go-to muse? The diva recently lit up the stage in her cabaret show, Two For the Road with Michael Feinstein, at Feinstein's at Loews Regency by showing off that she's still the preeminent Wildhorn interpreter. She sang two of Wildhorn's big-belting numbers (from Cyrano de Bergerac and Wonderland) and revealed that her ex courted her to play the role of the Mad Hatter in the short-lived Wonderland.
Did she take on the role of the Mad Hatter? No. Does she regret it? Um, no. Eder told Village Voice columnist Michael Musto she's "glad" she passed on the role that instead went to Kate Shindle. "I was tempted because the part sounded fun and I liked [the Mad Hatter's] song," she explained. "On opening night, I was really glad. I couldn't believe it. I thought, 'Do I even like theater anymore?' I was so bored!" Musto went on to say that Eder "made the Home Alone face" when she talked about seeing the show. Ouch!
Eder was much more generous about the musical based on Alice in Wonderland when she addressed the crowd from the Feinstein's stage, "The set, direction and plot didn't work. But Frank had nothing to do with that. He just wrote the music and that was great."
Here's hoping Wildhorn has better luck garnering his ex-wife's approval with his next Broadway endeavor, the eagerly anticipated Bonnie & Clyde. Performances of that new musical, starring Laura Osnes and Jeremy Jordan, are set to begin November 4 at the Schoenfeld Theatre. No word on whether Eder was offered a part in it.
