A slew of stage veterans including recent Olivier Award winner Sheridan Smith, Tony winner Maggie Smith (no relation) and Tony nominee Michael Gambon will star in Dustin Hoffman's upcoming feature film directorial debut, Quartet, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on Ronald Harwood's play of the same name, Quartet follows a group of senior citizens who live in a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. A new resident comes in and upsets the balance as old rivalries appear.
The film will also feature Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay and Pauline Collins.
Quartet had a four-month run at the West End's Albery Theatre beginning on September 8, 1999, in a production that starred Donald Sinden, Alec McCowen, Stephanie Cole and Angela Thorne.
