TV history is awash with musical episodes of popular shows, from Gilligan’s Island's musical version of Hamlet to Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s famous all-singing, all-dancing episode. Song-fests happen on dramas (Grey’s Anatomy) and sitcoms (Scrubs) alike. So how about 30 Rock? Broadway.com decided to test out the idea on cast member Cheyenne Jackson when we caught up with him on the opening night red carpet for Follies.
“That would be lovely!” Jackson exclaimed. “That would be a really good idea. There are so many musical people on the show.”
“Musical people” is putting it mildly, considering that Jane Krakowski, who has won both Tony and Olivier Awards for roles in musicals (Nine and Guys and Dolls, respectively) plays a character who already tends to break awkwardly into song. We know that Jackson, a Broadway veteran of shows like Finian’s Rainbow, Xanadu and Thoroughly Modern Millie has serious musical chops, and according to the actor, so does show creator and star Tina Fey.
“She’s all over it,” he said of Fey and an on-screen musical. “Tina is incredibly musical and actually quite a good singer herself, and her husband Jeff [Richmond] is the music supervisor and composer of every episode, so they could do it in a New York minute.” We're dreaming of the Alec Baldwin/Jack McBrayer duet already.
