Tony winner Tonya Pinkins will star in Playwrights Horizons' forthcoming production of Kirsten Greenidge’s Milk Like Sugar. Pinkins, who is currently starring in the world premiere of the play at La Jolla Playhouse, will continue with the production in place of previously announced off-Broadway headliner Eisa Davis, who has withdrawn “due to a filming commitment.” Directed by Rebecca Taichman, the NYC mounting begins previews on October 13 and officially opens on November 1.
The New York company now features the entire original world premiere cast, which in addition to Pinkins, includes the previously announced Cherise Boothe, Angela Lewis, Nikiya Mathis LeRoy McClain, J. Mallory-McCree and Adrienne C. Moore.
With potential for more but nowhere to put it, 16-year-old Annie’s (Lewis) got a choice: honor the pregnancy pact she made with her friends, or find the path to a brighter future. Milk Like Sugar follows one inner-city girl’s struggle to carve out a life beyond the only one she knows.
The limited engagement will play through November 20 at Playwrights Horizons' Peter Jay Sharp Theater.
