Follies star Bernadette Peters and Nick Jonas, who will join the cast of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in January, will guest star on NBC's upcoming Broadway-themed series, Smash.
Peters will play Leigh Conroy, the Tony-winning mother of Ivy (Megan Hilty), who now lives vicariously through her daughter's career as Ivy works to land a role in a new musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Jonas' character, Lyle West, is a hot sitcom star who began his career as a child actor in a Broadway show written by the Monroe musical's composer Tom (Christian Borle). Peters and Jonas will both sing on the show.
Peters is a two-time Tony winner for Annie Get Your Gun and Song and Dance. She has also received nominations for Gypsy, The Goodbye Girl, Into the Woods, Sunday in the Park With George, Mack & Mabel and On the Town. Her other Broadway credits include A Little Night Music, La Strada, George M! and The Most Happy Fella.
Jonas made his Broadway debut opposite Peters in Annie Get Your Gun and later appeared in Beauty and the Beast and Les Miserables. Jonas returned to Les Miserables in 2010 in the show's West End production and also participated in the musical's 25th anniversary concert in London. He is best known as one third of the popular music group the Jonas Brothers and leads his own group, Nick Jonas and the Administration.
Executive-produced by Steven Speilberg, Smash follows the path of a composing team as they create a new Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. The pilot episode was penned by playwright Theresa Rebeck, directed by Michael Mayer and features music from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The cast is lead by Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston and Katharine McPhee as well as many Broadway veterans including Borle, Hilty, Brian d'Arcy James, Wesley Taylor and Savannah Wise.
Smash will premiere on February 6, 2012.
