Bend It Like Beckham, the 2002 film that starred Parminder Nagra, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Keira Knightley in her first big role, is being adapted into a stage musical, with Sonia Friedman set to produce, according to the London Telegraph.
“The script is ready to go,” the film’s director and co-writer Gurinder Chadha told the paper, “It’s going to be on both the West End and Broadway. We are currently deciding who is the right person to write the score, so it’s at a really exciting stage.”
Bend It Like Beckham is the story of a young woman in London who rebels against her orthodox Sikh parents' traditionalism by pursuing her dreams of being a professional soccer player.
Though Knightley is a West End vet, having just appeared in a revival of The Children’s Hour, her spokesman reported that there are no plans for her to reprise her film role on stage.
