For Broadway stars it’s “Another Op’nin, Another Show,” and for Broadway.com it’s another week, another 10 lessons! Read on for a rundown of what we learned in the past seven days.
1. Sutton Foster’s Mouth Tastes Like Rainbows
As usual, Susan Blackwell got up close and face-licking personal with all our favorite stage stars at the recent Broadway Flea Market. While chatting with soon-to-be Funny Girl star Bobby Cannavale, Blackwell went digging for dirt on his superstar girlfriend by asking “What does Sutton Foster’s mouth taste like?” Cannavale (after an understandable double-take), answered, “Like rainbows…and me.” Is it weird to say we suspected as much?
2. Rent’s Original Roger and Mimi Had a Showmance
In a jaw-dropping moment on this week’s Show People, new Memphis headliner Adam Pascal revealed that he and his original Rent co-star Daphne Rubin-Vega were more than just onstage lovers. “Well, Daphne and I had our little affair,” Pascal told Broadway.com Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek, when asked for some secret Rent dish. That’s all ancient history, but Pascal admits he has no regrets: “I’m a lucky man! Jesus!”
3. Mormon Star Andrew Rannells Likes to Get It On at Cinnabon
After watching a recent Rollingstone.com video, we know a little too much about The Book of Mormon star Andrew Rannells. Co-star Josh Gad played interviewer and found out Rannells has an undying adoration for Gloria Estefan and thinks the most fun place to have sex—other than the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland (duh!)—is a Cinnabon. Um, Andrew? That sounds sticky.
4. Idina Menzel is “Secretly in Love” with Marvin Hamlisch
Idina Menzel is happily married to her former Rent co-star Taye Diggs, but on a recent appearance on a British morning show, the Wicked Tony winner revealed her secret affection for composer Marvin Hamlisch. The two frequent collaborators were in London for a concert at Royal Albert Hall, and when you watch them perform Hamlisch’s “The Way We Were” together, you can definitely feel the love.
5. Aaron Lazar is Funny!
Aaron Lazar, known for his sensational-but-serious roles in The Light in the Piazza, Les Miz, A Tale of Two Cities and A Little Night Music, is finally showing off his comedy chops. On satirical TV news show Onion News Network, Lazar is playing correspondent O’Brady Shaw, a role he described to Broadway.com as “Anderson Cooper meets [Anchorman's] Ron Burgundy, but it’s a little bit more sexy than that.” Sexier than Ron Burgundy, Aaron? We’ll be the judge of that!
6. The Cast of Godspell Runs on Caffeine and Candy
Godspell star Telly Leung let Broadway.com viewers in on the dirty secret of tech rehearsals in his latest video blog: Rampant snacking. The cast fuels up for long days with caffeine, cookies, and candy—in Leung’s case, a warehouse-sized bag of Skittles. One of the rare exceptions? Hunter Parrish, whose snack of choice is apple slices. But hey, Jesus has to set a good example, right?
7. Samuel L. Jackson Has Found Yet Another Medium to Say F**k
In The Mountaintop, Samuel L. Jackson spends every evening in 1968, but in real life the actor has joined the 21st century with a little help from funnyman Jimmy Fallon. That’s right: on Fallon’s talk show, Jackson finally created a Twitter account. We’d love to tell you what his first tweet was, but this is Samuel L. Jackson, and you can fit a lot of four-letter words into 140 characters.
8. Ugly Betty Will Get Sexy in Chicago
Looks like former Ugly Betty star America Ferrera has left her braces and terrible bangs far, far behind! She’ll soon make her West End debut stepping into some of the sexiest shoes in the business, recently vacated by supermodel Christie Brinkley: Roxie Hart in Chicago. Work it, America!
9. Patti Murin’s Got Game
You can always catch Broadway stars at a voice lesson or dance class, but the stars of Lysistrata Jones are honing an unusual skill: their basketball moves. The pressure is on for Patti Murin, who has to sink a game-winning basket during the show, but if her performance at the cast’s recent basketball camp with superstar Chris Mullin is any indication, Murin’s a natural! Guess that makes her a quadruple threat.
10. Aladdin Almost Kissed His Sister
The Lion King and Aladdin star Adam Jacobs would love to work with his talented sister, High School Musical vet Arielle, but the pair almost worked a little too closely. “My sister was up for the role of [Aladdin’s love interest] Jasmine!” Jacobs told Broadway.com, “She stepped aside when she found out I got it. That would not have worked!” Nope. We’re pretty sure Disney has rules about that.
