Tony nominee Jonathan Groff is headed back to Glee as Jesse St. James for a multi-episode arc later in season three, according to TVLine.com. Groff's days as a student are over, however, and Jesse is now set to coach his former singing group, Vocal Adrenaline. Groff is also expected to share many scenes with The Glee Project runner-up Alex Newell.
Groff recently wrapped the off-Broadway run of MCC's The Submission. He earned a Tony Award nomination for Spring Awakening. His other off-Broadway credits include Hair, The Bacchae, The Singing Forest and Prayer For My Enemy. Groff's film and TV credits include Taking Woodstock, The Conspirator, Twelve Thirty and One Life to Live.
This marks the third Glee engagement for Groff, who first appeared as Jesse in the final episodes of the series' first season. He returned for a multi-episode arc at the end of season two, when Jesse served as a consultant to Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) while the team prepped for the nationals competition.
Groff' isn't the only actor making a return to Glee in the show's future. Chord Overstreet (who plays departed glee club member Sam) is set to return for a multi-episode arc in December.
One Glee cast member has already expressed her enthusiasm for Groff's return. His former Spring Awakening co-star and real life close pal Lea Michele took to her Twitter page to say, "So happy to have my best friend in the world Jonathan Groff back on Glee this year. Makes me the happiest girl in the world!"
