Following a successful Broadway production earlier this year, Tyne Daly will take an encore as opera legend Maria Callas in Master Class as the Stephen Wadsworth-directed show transfers to London’s West End. The Terrence McNally play will begin previews at the Vaudeville Theatre on January 21, 2012 and open on February 7.
Master Class centers on real-life music icon Callas, who began teaching opera hopefuls after her own singing career ended and dared the next generation to make the same sacrifices and rise to the same heights that made her the most celebrated, reviled and controversial singer of her time. The original production of Master Class won 1996 Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Actress (Zoe Caldwell as Callas) and Best Featured Actress (Audra McDonald as a student performing during one of the diva’s master classes).
In addition to Daly, the recent Broadway production of Master Class starred Sierra Boggess, Clinton Brandhagen, Jeremy Cohen, Alexandra Silber and Garrett Sorenson. The Manhattan Theatre Club production began performances on June 14, 2011 and opened on July 7. After being extended twice, the show closed on September 4. No additional casting for the London run has yet been announced.
Master Class will run in London through April 28, 2012.
