Acting couple Dylan Baker and Becky Ann Baker have appeared separately on Broadway in La Bete, Mauritius and God of Carnage (him) and Good People, Assassins and All My Sons (her), but they’ll soon be playing husband and wife in the Broadway-centric series Smash. Broadway.com recently asked them about the new show and their TV daughter, American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee.
“It’s going to be great,” Dylan said of Smash, which debuts on NBC on February 6, 2012. “We’ve really enjoyed hanging out on the set with our ‘daughter’ Katharine McPhee, and watching her journey.” McPhee plays an unknown young actress vying for the role of Marilyn Monroe in a new Broadway musical about the screen icon—over the objections of her midwestern parents, played by the Bakers.
A staff packed with Broadway talent (including writer Theresa Rebeck, director Michael Mayer, composer and co-lyricist Marc Shaiman and co-lyricist Scott Wittman) will ensure that Smash feels authentic: “It’s really going to capture what it’s like to do a Broadway show,” Becky Ann said. “I think the reason Glee is so successful is that everybody loves singing, and this will have showtunes.”
But, seriously: Is Katharine McPhee ready to share scenes with Broadway vets like Megan Hilty (her rival to play Marilyn) and Christian Borle, not to mention screen faves like Anjelica Huston, Debra Messing and the Bakers themselves? “Oh, she is,” Dylan said. “She’s a beautiful girl, she can sing like a bird and her acting chops are great.” Echoed Becky Ann, “She’s going to be spectacular.”
