The annual Gypsy of the Year competition is one of the Broadway community’s favorite events, and the 2011 edition was no exception! High-wattage stars like Hugh Jackman, How to Succeed’s Daniel Radcliffe and Follies’ Bernadette Peters held court at the New Amsterdam Theatre on December 5 and 6, while more than 300 singers, dancers and musicians had a ball performing for a good cause. The program of songs, original skits and dances was topped by a once-in-a-lifetime reunion: 40 years after its debut, the original cast of Grease got together to perform for this adoring Broadway crowd. But the sweetest news of the day was the final tally: After six weeks of fundraising, the 53 participating Broadway, off-Broadway and national touring companies raised $4,895,253 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
