The popular 1908 children’s novel The Wind in the Willows will receive new life in London. Playwright Julian Fellowes and composer and lyricist duo George Stiles and Anthony Drewe will team up for a new musical adaptation of the classic tale. The three first collaborated on Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s hit musical Mary Poppins. The production will be developed and produced by Jamie Hendry Productions (Legally Blonde, Spring Awakening, La Cage Aux Folles). No dates or casting have been announced at this time.
The Wind in the Willows, written by Kenneth Grahame in 1908, follows the adventures of Mole, Rat, Badger and Toad on the river, in the countryside and in the Wild Wood. This will be the eighth stage adaptation of the novel, the most famous being the 1985 Tony-nominated production starring Nathan Lane as Toad.
Fellowes’ credits include the Emmy Award-winning Downtown Abbey, the Oscar-winning Gosford Park, The Importance of Being Earnest and an upcoming remake of Romeo & Juliet. Music duo Stiles and Drewe won an Olivier Award for Honk!; other credits include Betty Blue Eyes, Peter Pan and the upcoming stage adaptation of Soapdish.
