Basketball fans have a treat in store next spring: the Broadway premiere of Magic/Bird, a play focusing on the on-court rivalry and off-court friendship of NBA greats Earvin “Magic” Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics. Although no theater has been confirmed, playwright Eric Simonson (author of the football-themed Lombardi) and director Thomas Kail (In the Heights) are already at work on the production, and Magic himself could not be more excited. “It’s going to be amazing to have a play on Broadway,” he says in an exclusive preview video feature, which includes on-court footage of himself and Bird in their heyday. Johnson adds that a recent reading of Magic/Bird “blew me away.” Click on to hear from Magic, the creators and producers of this dramatization of a classic sports rivalry.
