Oscar winner, American Idol finalist, newly published author and WeightWatchers spokesperson Jennifer Hudson is determined to add another item to her ever-increasing resume: Broadway star.
“Everyone keeps asking me, ‘Jennifer, what’s next?’” Hudson told Broadway.com at a January 11 press event for her new book I Got This: How I Changed My Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down. “And [Broadway] is something on my list. I’m coming to Broadway eventually!” Is there any role in particular that would get her to the Rialto stage? “I don’t know yet,” she said with a laugh, “But I’m coming!”
Hudson did have her eye on one show at an early age, but it turns out she’s already checked it off her list. “Actually, it was Dreamgirls,” she said, when asked about a dream show. “But sometimes God gives you a little more than you ask for, and I ended up in the movie.” Her passionate performance as Effie White earned the singer-turned-actress a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Hudson previously appeared on the Great White Way in one-night-only concert versions of Hair and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
In keeping with the spirit of her book, Hudson, sporting a curve-hugging Yves Saint Laurent dress and a mile-wide smile, had some words of encouragement for her aspiring actor fans in the Broadway community. “Just know that it’s all about the talent,” she said. “Broadway and theater represents so much true, true, true talent, and that’s an inspiration for me.”
